Random Wind / A Caribbean Sailboat on the island St. Maarten |
|||
| For me, this sailing
trip on the Random Wind at the island of St. Maarten was the true
highlight of our Caribbean Cruise. I had too much fun. We
had a great combination of a great group of cruise critic friends and a
wonderful host and hostess in Trevor and Diane. The Random Wind is a 54 foot traditional sailboat and Diane books a maximum of 22 people at a time. The boat is in no way crowded and there is plenty of room for all. We begin with a short walk from the pier where the Carnival Dream is docked, to Diane's Random Wind. Everyone has to take off their shoes and put them in a crate, so we are all barefoot for the duration of the sailing trip. It was a very hot humid day, and when we arrived at the boat there were plenty of glasses of ice water already poured and waiting for us as we found places to sit on the boat. They had an ice chest filled with beer and various soda pops for us, and even various kinds of hard stuff, all free of course - an open bar! Trevor gave a safety talk and told us about details we might need to know on our sailing excursion. I presume the rest of our group which was on the Celine was having similar experiences. We sailed for maybe an hour, I'm not sure how long it took since we were having such a good time. The airport at St. Maarten island ends right at the beach and we got to see some interesting take offs and landings by various aircraft. I took some videos of a couple which you can find below. Arriving at the snorkeling / swimming destinationWhen we arrived at out final destination we dropped anchor or tied up to a buoy or something that anchored us in place, and the Celine tied up to us. Then it was time to "jump in" to the warm clear water. The water was a beautiful turquoise color and you could see right down to the bottom. Most of us went swimming and or snorkeling. The Random Wind had plenty of snorkeling equipment for us to use if we wished, and they had a big supply of long foam tubes to use for floaties to stay afloat without having to dog paddle. LOL. Lunch on the Random WindAfter swimming and snorkeling for a while Diane served lunch on the Random Wind. She prepared curried chicken and rice as the main course. Now I am not at all fond of curry, but I must admit that her curried chicken with rice was actually good. Those of us who like curry said they thought it was wonderful. As I recall we had three bean salad, grapes, and potato salad with it and everything tasted excellent. The food was even hot when served. Very nice. When Diane got everyone from our boat served she turned to the Celine. Some of the group on the Celine swam over to the Random Wind to eat lunch, but there were some who did not wish to swim over. Diane took them their lunches in an amazing fashion. She swam across to the other boat with two plates of hot food in her hands on each trip! She is quite talented. You should see how she gets in the water from the deck of the sailboat. I have a video of it below. The Tarzan SwingAfter everyone had finished lunch it was time for the Tarzan swing! The Tarzan swing was a trapeze type bar attached to the mast or whatever you call it by a long rope. One grabs the bar and swings out over the water and lets go. You can get fancy and do acrobatic tricks before you hit the water, although there is significant risk of embarrassing yourself with a belly flop or back flop. I took videos of many of the group doing the Tarzan swing thing and you can see some of the nice belly flops. LOL I tried the Tarzan swing a couple of times, but I didn't try anything fancy. Now I wished I had. I bet I could have done a flip or something. Maybe next time. One thing is for sure, if we visit St. Maarten on another cruise we will definitely want to take another sailing adventure on the Random Wind with Diane and Trevor. At one point Diane and Trevor Swung off together in a tandem dive. The Random Wind Sailing Excursion - A Wonderful Experince!Soon it was time to depart and head back to the Carnival Dream. It had been a wonderful day of frolicking in the sea with a great sail boat, wonderful hosts, and a great group of cruise critic friends. I recommend booking a sail boat outing on the Random Wind the next time you visit St. Marten. To find out more about the Random Wind Sail boating visit Diane's site at http://www.randomwind.com. You can even book a tour from the Random Wind website. P.S. After you get home you can download pictures taken with Diane's camera of the trip for free, one more nice touch. |
